Chapter 1 The golden light of the late autumn Siberian sun gleamed upon the black waters of Northern Lake Baikal, nestled at the foot of the Ural Mountains. After weeks of storms, a calm finally gripped the Siberian forests for the first time in what seemed like ages. The waters of the lake remained glassy in the gentle arctic breeze that rustled the thick foliage that crept up to the water's edge. Not a cloud was to be seen for miles upon miles as birds flew high into the heavens above. The shoreline was a vast swath of blazing yellows amidst the nearly black evergreens, the forests teeming with life and laden with the scents of tree sap.
